Rio and San Paulo have announced that the annual Brazil Rio Carnival will be postponed to April 2022. The main carnival samba parades are now tentatively scheduled for for April 20, 2022 through April 30, 2022. The decision to reschedule was based on a recent spike in COVID-19 cases.
Will there be local street carnival parades?
Right now many cities are announcing postponements of local street parades that normally occur during the week of Carnival. These events usually sponsored by blocos are now being cancelled or postponed to coincide with the April 2022 dates.
Can anyone join a band in Rio Carnival?
Rio Carnival is a bit different than carnival is other Caribbean islands. In order to jump in the Sambadromes you need to be part of a Samba band. Samba bands usually are organized months in advance and are generally not open to public participation.
There are some bands that have started offering carnival costumes to the public like riocostumes.com.
If you do decide to play with a samba band you will have to learn a specific dance and routine for the parade route.
